【文法】either,neither

eitherは2つのものの中から1つを選び出して「どちらか、どちらでも」の意味を表し、neitherはnot eitherと同義で「どちらも～ない」の意味になります。
eitherもneitherもふつう単数として扱われ、またそれぞれ代名詞のほか形容詞・副詞としても用いられます。

(1)　代名詞として

　You may take either of them.
　（君はその中のどちらかを取ってよい）
　Neither of the witnesses knows what happened.
　（証人はふたりとも事情を知らない）

[注]neither（＝not either）がbothの完全否定になることは前述しました。次の文で言いかたを確認してください。

　I believe both of them.
　I do not believe both of them.
　I believe either of them.
　I do not believe either of them.
　（＝I believe neither of them.） （ふたりとも信じている）
　（両方信じているわけではない）
　（いずれかを信じている）
　（いずれも信じていない）

(2)　形容詞として

　Sit on either side.　（どちら側にでも着席しなさい）
　He took neither side in the dispute.
　（彼はその争いのどちらにも肩をもたなかった）

[注]eitherはbothと同じ意味に使われることがありますが、そのときeitherの後には単数名詞がくることに注意。
　There were trees on either bank of the river.
　both (the) banks
　（川のどちらの土手にも樹木があった）

(3)　副詞として
“not･･･, either” の形で用いられ、tooの否定表現となります。

　I will not go there, either.　（私もそこには行かない）
　I will go there, too.　（私もそこに行く）

(4)　either～or･･･、neither～nor･･･の形で。
前者は「～か･･･かのどちらか」（肯定）、後者は「～も･･･もない」（否定）の意味を表します。

　Either come in or go out.　（入るか出るかしたまえ）
　He neither drinks nor smokes.　（彼は酒も飲まずたばこも吸わない）
